Danielle Orner

Danielle Orner is the subject of a series I shot recently and the subject of my recent email and print promo campaign.  She is such an inspiring person; a cancer survivor, actress, writer, yoga teacher and motivational speaker.  Check out her blog here.  ”Life is about discovering the beauty in our ugliness, the peace in our uncertainty, the strength in our weakness, and the love in our fear.” – Danielle Orner

Hannah Hart for NMR

Commercial

I recently photographed the lovely Hannah Hart for NMR (NewMediaRockstars) online magazine who interviewed the tiny but mighty mogul of the YouTubes. Hannah is one of my favorite faces to be around and therefore photograph. She is the creator of My Drunk Kitchen and Harto, the brand. She recently raised over 200K for her Hello, Harto tour which will take Hannah around the world to meet her fans and help people because on top of being a talented, comedic personality, Hannah has a giant-sized heart of gold. Go read her interview and see many more images now!

Dove: “Show Us Your Skin” Times Square Shoot

Commercial

I was honored to be hired to photograph for Dove‘s inspiring “Show Us Your Skin” campaign in the Good Morning America Studios in Times Square. The purpose of the shoot was so any woman who wanted to could be photographed and share their image as part of the campaign. I was happy to bring Tanya Salazar as my partner in crime.

Each woman who came into the studios had their photograph taken by either myself or Tanya and then could choose an image to upload immediately to the digital billboard outside of the Good Morning America Studios. The event was covered by several media outlets including Access Hollywood, and although I have yet to see it, I have heard I’ve been seen on Taxi TV’s all over the city. The images are also circulating on another billboard currently in Times Square as well as Dove’s website. This was a really rewarding shoot and I am grateful to Dove and Awestruck Marketing for having me be a part of it. Thanks to our assistants Adele Godfrey, Jenny Askew, and Katie Hawthorne for all of their help!

Calendar Girls Show

Commercial

My series “Calendar Girls” is featured this week as a solo exhibition at the LIC Arts Open. To celebrate I had a reception last weekend and will have a small evening reception tomorrow night from 6-8pm. The gallery is open daily from noon-6 and will continue through Sunday, May 20th. This Saturday, May 19th, although I won’t be present, there will be a block party and open studios throughout the neighborhood. Hope to see you this week!

Artist Statement:
This is a portrait series featuring queer and lesbian identifying women shot during one whole day at the beach. The project began as a calendar for Autostraddle.com, the world’s most popular independently-owned lesbian culture website, which was founded by close friends of mine. The calendar, originally meant to increase visibility of queer women within a mainstream construct, grew into an annual portrait introspective. For this particular series, I sought to capture images that would reflect the subjects’ feelings of freedom and comfort in their own skin. I was particularly interested in natural, uninhibited moments. I chose a simple expanse of sand and water where the horizon line is sometimes indistinguishable, which was the perfect setting for a very personal and focused look at each of these extraordinary women, among them a Miss California pageant contestant and a former Olympian.

As a photographer, documenting an entire day at the beach is a great challenge. The drastic change in light throughout the day and the ebb and flow of the tides adds an interesting contrast to an otherwise consistent series.

I loved coming away from this shoot knowing that many of these women are now friends, and I hope that these images reflect those bonds formed.

I had the honor of photographing one of my favorite models at MTV’s studios for Logo this past week, androgynous beauty Andrej Pejic, who is as lovely in person as he is in photographs. Here’s what I did with 5 minutes and one of the most gorgeous faces in fashion.

Sleep No More

Commercial

Happy Halloween! For the past few days, I have had the pleasure to photograph before and after one of my favorite shows, Punchdrunks’s New York based Sleep No More, an interactive play that takes place on 6 levels of the McKitterick Hotel. Its MacBeth meets Hitchcock’s Rebecca, silent theatre meets interpretive dance meets unbelievable set design… While I can’t post images from inside the show (you need to see it in person!), here are some favorites from the past few nights of a special pre-show outside, images from the bar “Manderley”, and the amazing and sexy after-parties held special for the weekend of Halloween.

This is probably one of the hardest places I have had to photograph. Inside much of the space you cannot use flash. Things move quickly and for those of you who know camera-talk, you are shooting at 6400 ISO wide open at 1.2 much of the time. The lighting is crazy and there is fog everywhere! Not ideal conditions, but when you hit it just right, you can capture the amazing look and feel of the show. Enjoy!
